Red Hot Chili Peppers brought “The Getaway World Tour” to Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, selling out the 18,000 seat arena
– Hey, I know that song! Tom Petty did that? I know those ones too! Shit, that’s his again? How many hits does this guy HAVE?
That’s pretty much the reaction of anyone attending their first Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert. The hits just keep on comin’ and they’re as familiar as an old, faded pair of jeans with patches on the ass.
For over 40 years Tom and the boys have been delivering straight up red white and blue rock’n’roll with no frills. Ok a few bizarre videos. And that one time with synths, but all is forgiven each time they hit the road and deliver the goods. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Heartbreakers about a half a dozen times since 1999. It was the first concert I attended alone, on a whim. It was absolutely mind blowing. I’ve been hooked ever since. That show stand out as the second best concert I’ve ever been to. I can’t say THE best, in case Prince is reading this (Oh my God, imagine if Prince was reading this!)
Currently on tour supporting Hypnotic Eye, they rocked the ACC overcoming a myriad of sound issues and a victorian-era union curfew. Running the gamut from, appropriately enough, their cover of the Byrds’ “So You Want To Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” from the Southern Accents days, to the standard crowd pleasing closer “American Girl”, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers delivered the good vibes, once again.
